What Is Epoxy Floor Coating and How Is It Applied?
Epoxy floor coating is a two-component system formed by mixing resin and hardener at a specific ratio. Once applied to a concrete surface, it cures through a chemical reaction and forms a non-porous layer that bonds with the substrate.
Which Layers Make Up an Epoxy System?
A properly applied epoxy system is more than a single coat. The number of layers depends on the load capacity of the slab and how intensively the floor is used.
- Primer: Penetrates concrete pores, provides adhesion and a moisture barrier.
- Intermediate / build coat: Mixed with quartz aggregate to add thickness and mechanical strength.
- Main coat: Forms the visible body of the system and defines colour and surface character.
- Topcoat: The protective final layer against abrasion, chemicals and UV.
The Application Process
- Moisture content and compressive strength of the slab are measured.
- The surface is mechanically opened by grinding or shot blasting.
- Cracks, segregation and level differences are repaired with epoxy mortar.
- Primer is applied and allowed to cure.
- The main coat is spread with a trowel or screed and de-aerated with a spiked roller.
- The topcoat is applied and the return-to-service period is observed.
The most common cause of epoxy failure is not material quality but skipped surface preparation.
Why Is Moisture Control Critical?
Residual moisture inside the concrete accumulates beneath the epoxy layer and causes blistering and delamination. Moisture content must be verified by measurement before application, and a moisture barrier primer used where necessary.
Return-to-Service Times
Foot traffic is usually possible after 24 hours, light vehicle traffic after 3 days, and full chemical resistance after 7 days. These periods extend at lower ambient temperatures.
